Fire at drugs den was arson attack

Arsonists are believed to be responsible for a blaze at a Corby drugs den.

Police think Tuesday's fire at the unoccupied house in Wharfedale Road was started deliberately.

Fire crews used a crane to continue repairs at the property yesterday and police closed part of the road while they carried out their investigation into the blaze.

Significant smoke damage was visible through the front door and a hole could be seen in the roof. There was also a strong smell of smoke in the air.

A police spokesman said: "The blaze spread through the property into the loft area and through to the top floor of the neighbouring house where it caused severe smoke and fire damage."

Matt Ruckwood, 24, of Wharfedale Road, said: "The smoke coming from the building was incredible.

"I could see the flames through the window and we called the fire brigade but two other people had already telephoned them.

"The neighbours came into the street and there was quite a bit of drama.

"The fire service was here within a few minutes and they stayed until about 1am."

Another Wharfedale Road resident, Daneta King, said: "I was in when it happened.

"Doors kept banging through the night which kept us up but the fire brigade and police have been very good. They were here all yesterday morning."

The property was raided by officers on February 7, when 400 cannabis plants were discovered.

The operation resulted in the arrest of a Vietnamese man, aged 26, on suspicion of cultivating cannabis.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw suspicious activity in the street at the time of the fire.

Witnesses are asked to telephone the police on 03000 111 222.
