Fence protests launched online
Protestors have launched a website in opposition to a fence built around a school.
Latimer Arts College in Barton Seagrave has constructed the fence around its site in a bid to improve the safety of its pupils and to control who has access to the site.
However, this has led to complaints from the community, parents and students who say it will mean more vehicles will be on the surrounding road, as reported in the Evening Telegraph last week.
The website, www.latimerfence.org.uk, has been set up in opposition to the fence and to encourage people to object to the closure of a
footpath which runs across part of the site.
Belvoir Drive resident Kirsty Ward said: "I understand the college has security issues but do not understand why this means they have to fence off the whole field.
"Surely it would have been more economical to have fenced off from the
Masque Theatre down to Castle Way."
Rufford Close resident Marie Morrison said: "The footpath is used daily by many residents from our side of Barton Seagrave. It is an essential access route from Belvoir Drive estate to get to the community centre and the Masque Theatre."
17-year-old student Zaak Kassam contacted the Evening Telegraph and said: "I am concerned people are more worried about a slightly longer walk or increased traffic than the safety of children.
"I'm to have to walk slightly longer to get to school, but if I can see it's in my best interest, then I'm sure adults can do, think of the bigger picture and stand by the school in its decision."
