Family fun as Rushden charity plans a healthy future
A charity is planning its first three-day family fun and healthy living event to encourage more people stay active.
Age Concern is to hold the event, called Lifetime in Rushden, to drive home the healthy living message.
It has held similar events in communities across the county, but this will be the first taking place during three days.
If it is a success the charity hopes it will lead to the start of other groups and activities in Rushden.
The charity's north Northants health promotion co-ordinator Robert Burke said: "At Age Concern we're concerned about all age groups and want to help people to stay healthy through all stages of their lives.
"The event is designed to be a lot of fun and help people become more aware about the importance of healthy living and physical activities.
"This is our first three-day event so it is important to us and we wanted to do it in Rushden because we're aware there are parts of the town where there could be more done to encourage people to do things like breastfeeding or give up smoking.
"On top of that we've always found people there very easy to communicate with and welcoming."
The event will be open to every Rushden family and will also give residents the chance to talk about whether they would like a regular healthy living group to be set up in the town.
In addition, the charity wants to gets people's views about the possibility of creating a community allotment where families could get physical exercise through gardening as well as access to healthy food.
Other attractions at the event will include face-painting, physical activities, indoor games, balloon badminton, a session on making healthy smoothie drinks from fresh fruit and vegetables plus courses to show older people how to text and use computers.
There will also be visits from a variety of organisations, such as the primary care trust, which will offer advice on a range of topics such as how to give up smoking.
The event will take place at the Highfield Community Baptist Church hall in Highfield Road, Rushden, between 10.30am and 3.30pm from Monday, October 27, to Wednesday, October 29.
