Families taught how to stay healthy at Easter
A group of child obesity experts has produced a list of tips to help families not to overload themselves with chocolate this Easter.
The tips have been produced by the Mend (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it!) team working in East Northamptonshire.
Currently, one in three children in the district is overweight or obese and the team hopes its tips will help families avoid the temptation of eating too much chocolate as the shops fill their shelves with Easter eggs.
Shane Davies, who runs a Mend programme at the Pemberton Centre in Rushden said: "Easter is a time when chocolate is everywhere, from Easter eggs to chocolate chicks, and for many families it can be a tricky time to control the amount eaten.
"Our top tips can help families resist eating too much chocolate at this time of year, while still having fun."
One of the Easter tips for families is to organise a treasure hunt by hiding real eggs, or plastic eggs with clues in them, around the house or garden and to replace the traditional chocolate prizes with toys.
Other ideas include having an egg decorating competition and buying Easter arts and crafts sets rather than chocolate for children.
Mend runs free after-school healthy lifestyle programmes which have already helped more than 15,000 families become healthier.
As well as finding out about the foods our bodies need to stay healthy, children take part in exciting games and activities and learn how to get fit by being creative with what they do.
The after-school Mend Programme will take place twice a week for 10 weeks at the Pemberton Centre between April 26 and July 12.
A limited number of places on the programme are free thanks to NHS Northamptonshire.
