Estates will get their own voices

Corby has beaten scores of bids from all over England and Wales to be chosen for a Home Office project to give communities a voice.

More than 100 applications were received for the Neighbourhood Agreement Pathfinders project and the town is one of just 12 areas selected to take part.

A meeting is being held at the Pen Green Centre, Corby, tonight to which residents are invited to go along and get involved in the scheme.

Also represented at the meeting, will be the police, fire service, Corby Council, JAM Team, the Local Criminal Justice Board, borough council's environment department and trading standards officials.

Sgt Julie Mead, who has been seconded on to the project for six months, is working with Corby Council senior manager Fred Scholey on the scheme.

She said: "This is an exciting project with real potential for further engaging our communities and giving them a voice.

"If they live, work, play or pray within Corby then I am encouraging people to attend.

"In my 18 years within the police service I always hear the phrase 'somebody should do something about it'. It's a true and to the point statement, but what is that something and who is that someone?

"Neighbourhood agreements give the community the voice to decide the answer to the question and to be part of the solution."

The Neighbourhood Agreement Pathfinders project was launched by the Home Office in January.

The expectation is that all areas taking part will have produced some form of Neighbourhood Agreement in about six months.

The aim is to improve how crime and anti-social behaviour is tackled, engage communities in the problems and to identify local champions who can drive the project forward.

Sgt Mead said: "Residents will have a real say in how we deliver their services.

"I want people to come along, find out what it's about and be part of the Neighbourhood Agreement.

"The aim is to improve people's quality of life and to encourage communities to take responsibility for their neighbourhood.

"Even a commitment from someone to be a good neighbour could make a big difference."

The meeting starts at 7pm.
