Enterprise Centre has a topping day

Builders have reached a significant milestone in the construction of the Corby Enterprise Centre.

A traditional topping out ceremony was held at the flagship centre to celebrate builders completing the structure up to roof height.

Councillor Jimmy Noble from Corby Council laid a ceremonial concrete block to mark the moment.

The Enterprise Centre will help small businesses get off the ground, providing back-room support and office space.

Cllr Noble said: "I remember having conversations years ago with the

former council leader Willie Smith when this was just an idea, we were saying how important it was for Corby to have a centre like this and I don't think that there could have been a more timely point at which we would want to see this become a reality.

"Corby has been hit by the global credit crunch just like everywhere else and we are all well aware that we still have tough times ahead of us.

"But the dedication partners have put into the regeneration of Corby over the years and into developments such as the Enterprise Centre is what will have an impact on our local economy and pull Corby through.

"We are proud to be the fastest growing place in the country and today highlights that, along with the new buildings we understand the need to create jobs for our residents and give start-up enterprises and businesses the support they need to flourish in our borough."

Sean Yeo, construction manager for Kier, said: "We are delighted to have reached this important part of the project and look forward to reaching a successful conclusion with all of our works in September this year."

The 8.3m project will provide 32,000sq ft of lettable office, workshop and studio space and will provide opportunities for entrepreneurs, start-ups and small businesses to work within flexible

spaces.

East Midlands Development Agency is the project's major funder, contributing nearly 6.5 million to the scheme, which includes 1m from Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited. Corby Council has invested 700,000 and the scheme has also received 1.1m from the European Regional Development Fund.

Special guest Louise Bagshawe MP was unable to attend the opening.
