Don't repeat this tragedy
POLICE and the Arson Task Force have issued a reminder about wheelie bin safety after a community meeting earlier this week on the estate where three-year-old Callum Bland died voiced concern that bins are being kept too close to homes.
Detective Chief Inspector John Jones attended at community meeting last week on the Hemmingwell estate where Callum died in a fire at his home in Fulmar Lane in the early hours of Monday, March 19. The fire started in a wheelie bin left near to an external door of the house.
In the wake of the fire, local people were urged to move their bins away from their properties to reduce the risk of a fire in a bin spreading to the house, but community leaders at last week's meeting were concerned that people were again leaving their bins against the walls of their homes.
Now Police and the Arson Task Force are asking people to remember to keep their bin at a distance from their house, preferably in a secure place not too close to the house with the lid shut.
DCI Jones said: "In the aftermath of the fire in which Callum died, people were moving their bins away from their houses in line with the advice we were giving. We would like people to continue to store their bins away from their homes as a sensible, good housekeeping measure."
The incident room investigating Callum's death was closed following a thorough police investigation, but the enquiry itself will remain open should new information come to light.
