Disabled woman pulled from fire
Brave neighbours rescued a disabled woman who was trapped in her bungalow when a fire broke out.
The woman, who has not been named, was pulled from the blaze by neighbours who battled through thick smoke and flames climbing the walls to save her.
The rescuers came to the woman's aid after the fire started in the bedroom of her bungalow in Lydia Court, Rushden, at around 7.30pm yesterday.
The neighbours entered the bungalow to save the woman before firefighters and ambulance crews arrived at the scene of the drama.
The rescued woman had been trapped in her bed.
Jan Butler was one of the neighbours who went into the house.
She said: "We managed to get in the back door and there was thick black smoke.
"We had managed to get through the smoke and grab the bed to pull her out but it got stuck.
"I could hear cracking noises and could see flames going up the wall and I knew we had to get her out straight away.
"A man grabbed her and managed to pull her out of the house and into the back garden."
A Rushden fire service spokesman said: "At the time we were called it was a small fire in the bedroom where the woman was.
"The lady was pulled out of the building before we arrived by a male neighbour and was being treated by medical staff.
"The fire severely damaged the bedroom where the woman was resting and the rest of the house was badly damaged by smoke."
Two crews from Rushden and Irthlingborough were called to tackle the blaze.
The cause of the fire is being investigated but is not believed to be suspicious.
