Dancers bidding to impress Cowell

A nine-strong hip-hop and dance group from Kettering, Corby and Oundle will be facing up to Simon Cowell after being chosen for the Britain's Got Talent television auditions.

Groove Phenomenon is made up of members of three families with ages ranging from eight to 35 and will be showing off their skills to a nationwide audience when the auditions screen in February.

They perform songs ranging from Michael Jackson to Nelly Furtardo and will be testing their nerve in front of the world-renowned pop mogul and his fellow panel members, journalist Piers Morgan and actress Amanda Holden

But performing in front of Mr Cowell and company should hold no fears for the group as they have already performed at a Prince's Trust concert at the Playhouse Theatre in Nottingham, and are waiting for a date to perform in front of Prince Charles at the Royal Albert Hall.

The group is made up of team leader Dale Russell, 16, from Sydney Street, Kettering, along with five members of the Stephenson family from Cheltenham Road, Oakley Vale, Corby – Andy, 35, Siobhan, 32, Cara, eight, Sai, 12 and co-leader Judith, 10.

The group is completed by members of the Simm family from New Road, Oundle – Emily, 14, Joe, 15 and Josh, 10. They all know each other as they are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Rothwell Road, Kettering.

Dale said: "When I found out we had made the auditions I felt ecstatic.

"We have to work hard now to prepare. You have to have nerves to perform.

"We do a lot of hip-hop and Michael Jackson-related stuff. We are a surprise act where you never know what is coming next. We like to use a range of songs and not just stick to one type."

On facing Simon Cowell, Dale added: "We are definitely prepared for

anything. It is not the first competition we have done. If he does criticise us we will just have to take it on board and put it into our next routine."

Groove Phenomenon will be among the groups competing for the 100,000 winners' prize and a chance to perform in front of the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance.

The programme helped Kettering teenager Faryl Smith launch her singing career when she first appeared on the show last May.
