Cuban adventure for energetic pair

Two energetic women are to cycle across Cuba to raise money for charity.

Val Colley and Donna Barry, both of Station Road, Irchester, will pedal 250 miles across the tropical paradise to raise cash for Women for Women, which raises awareness about pregnancy and birth issues.

Inspired by This Morning host Fern Britton, the pair are hoping to lose weight and build stamina as well as raise awareness about premature births and stem cell research.

However, they need to raise another 1,000 before they can emulate the small screen star we recently took up cycling.

Ms Colley, 54, said: "I thought I would give this a go. I had read an article about Fern Britton who had done a very similar thing in the past. I noticed she had lost weight and looked fit."

Ms Barry, 36, who works with Ms Colley at Eclipse Training in Irchester, added: "Maybe this will help towards getting a cure for lots of different illnesses."

Both cyclists have very personal reasons for embarking on the challenge, which will means 50 miles a day of cycling for five days.

Ms Colley wants to prove her strength and stamina in tough terrain after recovering from an operation on both kneecaps earlier this year.

She is also keen to support the work Women for Women do in helping babies that are born with illnesses. Her granddaughter was born prematurely and weighed just three pounds and five ounces but has since recovered to be perfectly healthy.

Ms Barry is also keen to improve her fitness but wants to highlight work on stem cell research.

Several of her relatives suffer from diabetes and she hopes the money raised from the trip will go towards finding a cure at some point in the future.

They have been training hard for the event with regular long bike rides, including 40 miles a day during training in the Cotswolds.

They have raised 5,000 so far by finding sponsors for the T-shirts they will wear on the event and by find individual sponsorship.
