Couple sell home to fund Goa trip

A couple have sold their comfortable home in Rushden to fund a trip to the slums of Goa where they will care for children living in poverty.

Donna Wilder became interested in trying to help tackle child poverty after going on a surprise holiday to Goa to celebrate her 50th birthday in 2006.

Now 53-year-old Mrs Wilder has been to Goa eight times and she is set to return for five months to work out there.

Mrs Wilder and her husband Charles, 60, have sold their home and are getting ready to leave for India in November.

Mrs Wilder has asked her friends on the social networking website Facebook to contribute 1 each and she plans to use the cash to buy 'luxury' foods – regular items for us like crisps, biscuits and sweets – to use to make Christmas hampers.

The Wilders will take the hampers to the slums and give them out to children on Christmas Day.

The staff at Connells in Rushden and the management at Simpson and Weekley in Rushden, the two firms which were involved in selling the house, have also donated 100 each.

Mrs Wilder said the couple wanted to go out to Goa and help youngsters now while they are still "fit, healthy, able to do it and put a lot of effort into it".

She said: "I don't think I ever appreciated what I had until I went to Goa and saw they had nothing.

"It's completely changed my outlook, I look at things in a different

light.

"We are selling up. We have had a good life, enjoyed ourselves and got some lovely things but these people need help.

"I have been a childminder for 27 years and I have thoroughly enjoyed my job but those children don't need the help."

Mrs Wilder said she had taken 80kg of toys and clothes over on previous trips to Goa but now she would have to pay extra to the airline to take them.

She said a friend will be bringing over the latest items she has collected as their luggage on two separate trips while she is still out in India.

It was because she couldn't take the items over herself that she came up with the idea of raising cash to take over instead. To donate cash for Mrs Wilder to take to help people in Goa call her on 07737 267714.
