County patients in £20m research

A £20m health research project will see research carried out on patients from north Nothamptonshire to help experts prevent and detect illnesses like diabetes and kidney disease.

NHS professionals from Northamptonshire, as well as their counterparts from Rutland and Leicestershire, are joining forces with the University of Leicester to test new treatments and new ways of working.

The three-year research programme will look at the progression of different diseases and examine where changes could be made to the services offered to patients.

The launch of the programme – National Institute of Health Research, Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) – will be held at the Kettering Conference Centre on June 29.

It is one of only nine partnerships across the country which will see a university and NHS organisations collaborating to conduct research and improve patient care in major conditions like heart disease and obesity.

Dr Philip Shelton, from the department of health sciences at the university, said: "We'll be looking at how we can tackle a whole range of diseases in this area and fill in the gaps in current working. There is a big thirst from GPs to take on our studies because they are relevant. They are focused on the local population, rather than results from across the country.

"We'll be looking at the results of our studies to make better decisions and commission new services.

"We will be looking at themes, such as early detection of disease, prevention, disease progression and rehabilitation.

"This collaboration will create and embed approaches to research and its distribution that are specifically designed to take account of the way that health care is delivered across sectors and a wide geographical area."

The project includes a study of chronic kidney disease in Northampton.

Health professionals and academics are invited to attend the launch in Kettering. To book a place call Dr Philip Shelton on 0116 2525476.
