William Sharman is a big hit on Facebook

The number of William Sharman fans who have joined a Facebook group dedicated to him has rocketed beyond the 1,000 mark.

More than 1,400 have joined the site after the hurdler's successes in the world championships and this weekend's British Grand Prix, where he finished second.

A surge of people have joined the group in the last 48 hours after Sharman was just pipped to the line at Gateshead on Monday by World Championship bronze medallist David Payne of the United States.

Comments backing the London 2012 hopeful have been flooding onto the social networking site.

One of them from Ben Roberts said: "I was in the stadium at Gateshead watching you race. You really are something. Not just on the track, but you were so friendly to all of us in the crowd. Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing you next season."

Inez Yunus, from Grenada, said: "Each time I see you run and hurdle you're getting better and better. Keep it up and I know that by 2012 you will have the gold medal. You are an inspiration and a really nice guy."

Lisa Woodward said: "I was lucky enough to get a photo with you today. It was so nice of you to give your time. You're a great ambassador for Great British athletics and we really do believe the gold is in reach for 2012."
