Water crisis clockwatch: How the drama unfolded

7am: More than 100,000 households in Northamptonshire have been to their boil drinking water after traces of bacteria were found.

Residents have been urged by Anglian Water to boil all their water until further notice to protect them from a bacteria called cryptosporidium found in water supplies which can cause severe stomach upsets and can pose a serious health risk to the very young and elderly.

9am: Supermarket shelves are already running drastically low on bottled water following an alert about tap water in Northamptonshire.

Both Sainbury's and Tesco are rationing the amount of bottled water each customer can purchase due to the tap water being contaminated by the bug crytosporidium.

9.15am: Schools in areas affected by the county's water contamination, are being advised to close if they do not have enough bottled water.

Northamptonshire County Council has contacted schools advising them to close if they do not have a big enough reserve of safe water to drink.

9.30am: The bug found in Northamptonshire tap water can cause "watery diarrhoea" and last for a month, according to the Health Protection Agency.

Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite (a tiny organism) that causes an infection called cryptosporidiosis affecting people and cattle.

12.10pm:Police are warning people to make sure they don't become the victim of a distraction burglary.

Anglian Water will have more staff than usual out and about providing water but people should make sure they still check for identification to make sure they are a genuine caller.

2.10pm: Sainsbury's in Wellingborough ran out of bottled water at about midday today.

Customers concerned about the cryptosporidium virus which had contaminated supplies in the west of the county, bought hundreds of litres of water at a the store in Northampton Road.

4.30pm: Schools closed across Northampton because of contaminated water will be able to open on Thursday after Anglian Water promised to deliver bottled supplies.

Dozens of schools sent pupils home on Wednesday after tests showed a bacteria in tap water.

6.30pm: Worried villagers have besieged Anglian Water with calls.

The water board's phone lines have been so jammed they have had to divert calls to local authorities.

Despite their best efforts people in the villages affected feel there are many unanswered questions about the cryptosporidium samples found in Northamptonshire's water supply.

8.30am: Residents in Kettering who received red cards warning that their tap water is contaminated have been told they are not at risk.

Trish Tweddle of Anglian Water this morning said the cards had been sent to Kettering by mistake.

Once the all-clear is given, residents receive a green card advising them the situation is normal.

July 2, 6.20pm: Three quarters of Anglian Water customers affected by the poisoned water outbreak are set to have their boil notices removed.

The company believes 75 per cent of customers in the Northampton area will have safe, clean drinking water from Friday after traces of cryptosporidium were found last week.

It follows a successful flushing programme by Anglia Water.
