Town's future in your hands

A community has been urged to play a vocal part in plans to shape the future of their town.

This month, it was revealed Prince Charles' architectural trust, The Prince's Foundation, had started looking at plans to regenerate Rushden town centre.

Next week it will be over to residents to have their say on what has emerged from the work so far.

Rushden Town Council leader, Cllr Colin Wright, said: "I hope the public makes every effort to complete the survey which has gone out and to attend the public meetings. It's their town and their future."

The survey, which is in East Northamptonshire Council's magazine, Nene Valley News, asks people whether Rushden is a good place to live, shop and work and what is important to them about the town.

It also asks what people would like to happen at Splash Pool, the Duck Street and John Street car parks, Newton Road recycling centre and car park and Alfred Street School.

Last week, it appeared as though plans to free up the school site could be moving forward.

Northamptonshire County Council announced education in the town could receive millions of pounds under a set of proposals which include plans to merge Alfred Street Junior School with Tennyson Road School at the latter's site.

Town council deputy leader, Cllr Richard Lewis, has received a presentation on the work of The Prince's Foundation's progress.

He said: "As part of their work they've been analysing the ages of people using the town centre and where they come from. I think people will find the public meetings interesting. It's important we put plans in place for the future - Corby did and now it has a railway station and an impressive new swimming pool."

The meetings will be held at Alfred Street Junior School from 6.30pm on Wednesday, February 24, and Friday, February 26.
