School's cinema is projected for estate

A school has applied for a licence to run a community cinema.

Oakway Infant and Junior School in Wellingborough is looking at the potential of targeting the community at large as well as the school.

The plan has been discussed at meetings of the Hemmingwell Action Group, a forum which includes representatives from local police, schools, the fire service, Wellingborough Council, housing association Wellingborough Homes and Hemmingwell Residents' Association.

If the goes ahead it would be an asset to the estate as there is no cinema in Wellingborough other than screenings at The Castle theatre.

The nearest cinema is the Odeon in Kettering, which is about six miles from the Hemmingwell estate.

Cllr Graham Lawman, who represents Hemmingwell on Wellingborough Council, said the school was hoping to attract audiences of all ages with various films.

He said: "It would be another excellent addition to the facilities in the area and it's good to see the school resources being used for the benefit of the whole community.

"Those who left school a long time ago might benefit from what's there.

"It's taking the facilities to the people, which has got to be a good thing. It would make it easier for them to get home afterwards too."

Jennie Mitchell, of Thrush Lane, who is a member of the Hemmingwell Residents' Association, said: "It's a good plan because getting into town from here is not always easy in the evenings – there are no buses, they stop running at 7pm.

"Cinemas these days are beyond my pocket so I would have thought it would be good to have a community cinema. It would be another thing to keep the community together.

"I think it's diabolical for town of this size to have no cinema."
