Residents needed to tackle the yobs

Everyone can play a part in the battle against yobs, say police and council wardens.

An appeal has been made for residents to help combat the problem following the decicion by businessman Mirza Sherry to sell up and leave the Texaco petrol station in the town following abuse by under-age drinkers.

Mr Sherry employs 10 members of staff at the garage, near the town centre, and they have all been victims of physical and verbal attacks.

Three months ago he invested 90,000 to upgrade the petrol station but last week he said: "We're fighting a losing battle.

"I'm getting out."

A spokesman for Corby Council said: "Tackling underage drinking and anti-social behaviour is a priority for us.

"We would ask local businesses and residents to report any issues or incidents in their area so we can look at implementing prevention techniques such as reinstating any deployable CCTV cameras."

Up until the end of 2009 the area around the garage and the nearby KFC restaurant and takeaway was a dispersal area.

"Police officers had the power to move on groups of two or more people if their behaviour was likely to result in a member of the public being harassed or intimidated."

The council spokesman continued: "As a result of this there has been a significant reduction in the number of incidents reported."

People can report anti-social behaviour to the council on 01536 464603.

A police spokesman added: "The issue remains a priority for the team and they will continue to tackle it alongside Corby Council.

"During the summer holiday's parents are reminded of their responsibility to make sure they know where their children are and what they are doing at all times."

Police can be contacted on 03000 111 222.
