Record number tested in drink-drive blitz
County police carried out a record number of breath tests during the force's annual summer drink-drive campaign – 1,448 compared with 417 last year.
But while the number of tests increased, the number of people arrested after positive tests has fallen as a percentage of the total.
There were 106 arrests throughout June, which is seven per cent of all drivers tested, compared with 97 arrests in the same period in 2008, equal to 23 per cent of drivers checked.
Police carried out 30 roadside operations during the campaign, which ran from June 1 to June 30, and breath-tested people who were stopped after a collision or for other motoring offences.
Supt Sean Bell said: "We promised to make the crackdown on drink driving the biggest ever and I am really pleased to say that we have achieved that.
"But while the number of people who were driving under the influence went down in relative terms compared with 2008, there were still more
than 100 people who gave a positive test and that is very disappointing.
"We will continue to reinforce the message that drinking and driving is unacceptable."
