Plans revisited

Controversial government plans to replace existing fire control centres with regional centres are to be looked at again.

The Communities and Local Government Committee said it will consider progress with the project to centralise call centres in the East Midlands, the reasons for the cost and time overruns and any changes needed for proceeding with the project.

The Fire Brigades Union has been campaigning against the changes for more than two years.

It claims the cost has spiralled from 100 million to 1.4 billion.

Under the new system all 46 brigade emergency fire controls in England would be closed and replaced by a network of nine region-wide control centres.
