Pensioner killed after being hit by lorry is named by police
The 79-year-old woman who died after being hit by a seven-and-a-half-tonne truck yesterday has been named by police.
Savia Maria Giacobbe was hit by the lorry on the Northfield Avenue roundabout with Rothwell Road and Lower Street.
Mrs Giacobbe, who was on foot, died later at Kettering General Hospital.
Police have informed Mrs Giacobbe's family.
It appears Mrs Giacobbe was trying to cross to the middle of the roundabout when she was struck.
The 55-year-old male driver of the lorry, from Burton-upon-Trent, was uninjured.
Collision investigator Keith Millard said Mrs Giacobbe had probably come from the direction of Kettering General Hospital.
She was lying in the middle of the road where Lower Street meets the roundabout, more than 20 metres from the nearest pedestrian crossing.
Police closed one lane of Lower Street for more than an hour as officers carried out an investigation, causing traffic jams along Northfield Avenue, Rothwell Road and Lower Street.
Four police cars and more than a dozen officers blocked traffic as paramedics battled for an hour to treat Mrs Giacobbe at the scene.
A policeman then directed traffic around the side of Prospect House as accident investigators tried to piece together what had happened.
