Park idea would transform wood
More than 70 hectacres of woodland in Corby are to be transformed into an attractive park over the next 15 years.
A plan has been drawn up to make Hazel and Thoroughsale Woods a safe, attractive and well-managed green area for people to enjoy.
The plans by Corby Council and Lockhart Garratt Ltd include a substantial clean-up programme to remove rubbish, improvements to access and the creation of better habitats for wildlife.
A council spokesman said: "The plan sets out how the transformation of the woods will be undertaken to revive Corby's green heart and deliver multiple benefits to the borough.
"It provides a clear, strategic and holistic framework of work over a
15-year period and will be sustainable into the future.
"The plan will deliver a multitude of improvements and benefits for the people of Corby and its wildlife."
Tree work techniques including coppicing and pollarding will be used to help to restructure and regenerate the woodland.
It is hoped that new types of plants, insects and birds will be able to live in the enhanced habitat.
The existing route between the town centre and the boating lake complex will be improved and signs will be put up to attract people to Hazel and Thoroughsale.
A programme of regular path maintenance, upgrading of main routes and building of new paths are also planned.
Education opportunities for adults and children will be linked to the management of Corby's green heartland.
The major management plan comes two years after the Friends of Hazel and Thoroughsale Woods group was set up Chairman Rick Allanson said: "There are going to be some vast changes. Our vision for the woodland and boating lake is to go for Green Flag status.
"The ambition is to change the whole name to the Corby Central Park. We're very close to beginning the first part of our plan. We want to producing a woodland for generations to come."
Initial funding for the first five years will be through the Homes and Communities Agency, who are providing substantial financial support towards the project's costs.
The final cost is not yet known.
