Morgan steers a course to green future

A nine-year-old with a passion for recycling jumped at the chance to ride in a refuse collector and street sweeper after designing a poster promoting recycling.

Yesterday, Morgan Dempsie, of Hidcote Close, Corby, visited Keir Street Services, the company which collects waste and recycling from 25,000 homes across Corby on behalf of the council.

He was invited to the site after designing a poster promoting recycling which he had drawn as part of a school project.

Morgan was given a tour of the depot, a guide to how the refuse collectors work and the chance to sit in a street cleaner.

He said: "I really enjoyed looking around and sitting in the bin lorry and seeing how they work. I would like to drive one when I'm older."

Morgan was joined at the Kier Street Service depot in Lammas Road, Corby, by his mum Tammy Dempsie and grandmother Margaret Wilson.

Mrs Wilson said: "Morgan is really good – I wasn't recycling properly and he told me what I should be doing and what I can and can't recycle.

"It's really good that he is so enthusiastic about it."

Kier general manager Glyn Jones showed Morgan how the different vehicles work, how they are controlled and how a bin is emptied into the back of the truck.

Morgan is now a pupil at Oakley Vale Primary School, but he had been

involved in a project at his previous school, Studfall Junior, where pupils designed posters to promote recycling.

Morgan gave his poster to Kier employee Russell Darroch and Mr Jones

decided to invite the youngster to the depot.

Mr Jones said: "It's great to have people from the community come and see the work we do here. It was great to have the poster from Morgan and when we heard how enthusiastic he was about recycling I called his mum and invited them down."

Mrs Dempsie said: "I'm proud of Morgan and he really enjoys recycling."
