More support for donor campaign

Two people who have given the gift of life through organ donation in very different circumstances have been recognised by charity events in their name.

Sixth formers at The Kingswood School in Corby have presented a cheque for 883 to the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance after a hosting a rock concert in memory of former pupil Justin Luckins.

Justin, 17, of Corby, died in a car accident last August but helped save three other lives as he had signed up to the organ donor register.

And a Bavarian beer and oompah night has been organised to raise money for Paul Davies, of Thrapston, who will be off work for about six months after he donates a kidney to his 14-year-old son, Jordan. Mr Davies is self-employed so will receive no sick pay.

It will take place on Tuesday, March 23, in the Fairisle Suite at Kettering Conference Centre with live music from the Bierkeller Men.

Both people have featured in the Evening Telegraph in the last week as we are backing Kettering General Hospital's campaign to promote the importance of signing the organ donor register.

Kaye Taylor, head of sixth form at The Kingswood School, also backed the campaign. She said: "It is a great idea. Justin's death was tragic but it was some small comfort that he was able to help others. It was the best of a tragic situation and his parents were proud of him.

"The concert was a great success and a great night. You just saw the students come alive and natural leaders emerge.

"They organised all the bands, promotion, equipment and lighting. It was so important for them to do it. They almost forgot it was for coursework - it was about doing Justin proud."

Mr Davies' mother Sandra is involved with organising the event for her son and has backed the donor campaign.

She said: "Once you have died, if you can support someone else then I wholeheartedly support it, whether it is a soldier fighting in Afghanistan or a young child.

"Two weeks ago Jordan wasn't very well and because of his kidney problem it really did knock him. It is another reason we have to push this on. He needs the operation sooner rather than later."

Doors open at 7pm for an 8pm start and tickets are 10 from Mrs Davies on 01832 732339 or 07799 850261.
