Masterplan set to attract investors

A masterplan outlining 20 major projects for the future of Wellingborough is a step closer to be sent to investors.

The Wellingborough 2020 Vision received a mixed review from councillors on Wellingborough Council's resources committee last night.

The document features the North Northamptonshire branding of a swan, which appears on marketing materials for all the towns in the north of the county.

On the final page there is the outline of a swan with the four north Northamptonshire towns on it, as well as other nearby towns and cities.

But some councillors questioned the decision to include other locations in it.

The committee decided to remove Bedford and Luton from the graphic and add the more "upmarket" locations of Oxford and Cambridge.

Cllr Lora Lawman said: "The whole campaign features around north Northamptonshire – I suggest we leave London, Luton, Bedford, Milton Keynes, Leicester and Peterborough out and concentrate on Kettering, Corby and Rushden, with Wellingborough in the centre."

Cllr Graham Lawman said: "We have said in here it's a safer and accessible Wellingborough, we certainly want to have London in there."

Cllr Thomas Pursglove said: "I think we probably would be better off having more upmarket towns and cities if we are going to have other place names in there."

Cllr Lora Lawman also questioned part of the vision which talks about Wellingborough town centre's current low ranking.

She said: "We are trying to promote Wellingborough, we don't want people to take one look at it and think this is such a dire place."

But the council's corporate director James Wilson said: "If we only include the positive things without highlighting potentially some of the limitations of Wellingborough investors and residents would see through this as not being based in reality."

Changes asked for by councillors will now be made to the 2020 Vision and it will go to the local authority's full council meeting for approval before being sent out to investors.
