Kettering phone mast fight goes on

Residents are preparing to fight plans for a phone mast for the third time.

It comes just two months after a council rejected the proposal.

Phone company O2 has submitted plans to Kettering Council to replace its existing mobile phone mast at the Ise Garden Centre in Warkton Lane, Kettering, and to add three extra antennae.

But nearby residents have vowed to fight the plans for the third time in three years, claiming the mast could have adverse effects on their long-term health.

The original application for changes to the mast was rejected in 2005 by Kettering Council and then by the Planning Inspectorate after an appeal the following year.

It was then re-submitted in July but rejected after more than 50 residents signed a petition against it and Kettering MP Philip Hollobone backed them.

The application was refused on the grounds that it would be an overbearing structure and would visually impact on the appearance of the area.

Margot Jameson, of Deeble Road, said: "It is getting to the point where it is almost like bullying – they won't take no for an answer.

"I feel as though as soon as people are celebrating a victory another application is submitted.

"If they put on a meeting and explained everything thoroughly to us with proof there were no health risks it may be more likely to get through."

The phone company wants to install the 15m mast so mobile users can use upgrades, such as video calling and internet access, with greater speed.

The public consultation will run until December 2 and the council is expected to make a decision by the end of the year.
