Investing in your future
THE biggest employer in Corby has pledged to invest in its future workforce as it celebrates its 70th anniversary this weekend.
The general manager of leading UK industrial supplier RS Components has said the company is committed to forming links with schools and other educational institutions to create a high-skilled workforce.
One of Europe's biggest distributors, RS Components offers a same-day dispatch of electronic, electrical and mechanical components, health and safety products and associated tools.
The company's general manager Klaus Goeldenbot, said: "We are one of the biggest providers in Northamptonshire. But our main vision is to Corby.
"We are absolutely committed to Corby."
He said the town's regeneration is benefiting employees, but the company has difficulty in recruiting staff with the right skills from the area.
He urged education leaders and schools to help equip young people for work, particularly with communication skills, computer literacy and internet experience.
He said: "There is a shortage in the market at the moment. We have 100 job vacancies. A lot of people apply but they are people with limited communication experience.
"What we are looking for is people that are ready for the challenges of today."
The company is now forming links with Corby's new flagship academy school, being built next door to its site at the Priors Hall development.
RS Components is hosting three open evenings next week for prospective parents and pupils of the school, due to open in September 2008.
The academy's principal, Dr Andrew Campbell, said: "We are delighted that RS Components has already taken an interest in us.
"It is going to be an academy specialising in business and enterprise.
"We see ourselves as a school that is absolutely committed to partnerships with businesses in Corby and further afield."
RS Components began operations from a small office in London, and moved its main operations to Corby in 1984.
The company, which employs 2,000 people at its site in Birchington Road, Corby, is marking its birthday tomorrow with a charity fun day.
Organisers are expecting up to 4,000 staff and family members at the fun day, which will give people the opportunity to explore the company's history and its challenges for the future.
