Half of county hall staff proud to work for Northamptonshire council

Only half of county council staff are proud to work for the authority despite a year-long campaign to improve job satisfaction.

The latest survey completed by more than 2,600 council workers to be presented to councillors next week reveals that only 52 per cent are proud to work for the council.

The council launched a PRIDE campaign after the last survey held two years ago showed only 46 per cent of staff were proud of their job.

Although the figure has improved slightly, fewer than half of staff said they were passionate about their jobs.

Fewer than two thirds said they showed responsibility for their job and only half felt that they displayed excellence in their work.

As part of the PRIDE programme the council held staff focus groups, developed the list of values represented by its acronym, increased training for managers to maximise workers' potential and invested 250,000 in training for staff at all levels.

Despite this fewer than a third of staff said they felt valued and recognised for the work they did and fewer than half said they would speak highly of the council.

Just over half of staff felt good performance was recognised, but only a third felt that poor performance in their department was managed well.

The county council is planning to cut 100 million from its budget over the next four years.

This could lead to job losses and will see terms, conditions and pay changes for many employees.

More than four out of five employees said they understood change was necessary and almost as many said they are treated with fairness and respect.

A county council spokesman welcomed the survey.

The spokesman said: "It is good news that these survey results are positive.

"These are significant improvements for an organisation of this size particularly at such a challenging time to work in the public sector.

"Although there is still some progress to be made, it clearly demonstrates that the work we are doing is making a real difference for our employees."
