Grieving family in asbestos link hunt

The family of a woman who died as a result of asbestos is searching for more information about where she was exposed to the deadly dust.

Tracey Carpenter was 43 when she died from cancer in November after being diagnosed with mesothelioma in July.

The Kettering mother left an 18-year-old daughter Jade, a 16-year-old son Reece and partner Gary Haldane.

She could not recall working with asbestos but may have been exposed to the substance through contact with clothing worn by her father while he worked at British Steel in Corby.

Mr Haldane said: "Tracey was always on the go and when she was diagnosed with mesothelioma it was a massive shock for the whole family, particularly when we realised that it was untreatable.

"Tracey loved to cycle and dreamed that she would climb Mount Kilimanjaro before she turned 50."

Her father, Charles Fairey, who died in 1980, aged 56, worked as a crane driver in the bessemer plant at British Steel from 1956 to 1980.

Before she died, Tracey, who worked at Kettering Council, remembered her father coming home from work wearing dusty clothing when she was a child. She also remembered helping with the laundry which included her father's work clothes.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos and it can be decades before the symptoms occur.

Last month the Evening Telegraph revealed that 276 people died in the county between 1981 and 2005 as a result of asbestos.

The figure is the highest in the East Midlands.

Tracey's family is appealing for anyone who worked as a crane driver, or on the maintenance of cranes at Corby steelworks or who worked with Mr Fairey to get in touch if they have any information about the presence of asbestos.

Thompsons Solicitors is investigating the possibility of obtaining compensation for the family.

Mr Haldane said: "It means a great deal to the whole family to find out more about how Tracey was exposed to asbestos."

Anyone with information is asked to call Neil Baines on 0115 9897209.
