Cinema is now Corby's top priority

Films could replace shows on the site of Corby's former theatre.

Corby Council is in talks with two cinema companies about building a multiplex cinema either on the Willows Arts Centre site or somewhere else in the town centre.

Providing a cinema for the town is the next priority for Corby Council after the opening of the international swimming pool and the ongoing construction of the Corby Cube civic hub which will include a theatre.

Council chief executive Chris Mallender said: "We have discussions ongoing with two potential cinema operators.

"We are certainly aiming to have a planning application in by March next year. That's the target.

"This is the biggest priority now. A cinema would mean people would visit and spend longer in Corby.

"By this time next year, not only will people be coming to the swimming pool and gym, they will also be able to go to the theatre, library and we're also hoping to have a rooftop bar at the Corby Cube. A multiplex cinema is another reason to stay in Corby.

"It's all about encouraging people to come to the town and to spend money so we can generate additional jobs."

Mr Mallender said the main discussions with potential operators centre on how a multiplex for the town could be financed.

Childminder Sandra Battersby, 54, of Cottingham, said: "I think it would be good to have a cinema in Corby. It would be quite popular.

"I don't go to the cinema too often but when you do you have to go to Kettering. I think it's something that is missing in Corby. It would be even better to have it in the town centre, especially for people who can't drive."

Demolition work is well underway on the Willows Arts Centre, in George Street, and is expected to be completed by Christmas.

Mr Mallender said the council would be ready "surrender" its offices in Deene House, in New Post Office Square, to development when workers move into the Corby Cube next summer.
