Beggar jailed for breach of Asbo
A nuisance beggar has been jailed for seven days after he pleaded guilty to breaching his anti-social behaviour order.
Jamie Cooke, 25, of The Pyghtle, Earls Barton, appeared at Northampton Magistrates Court after he caused harassment, alarm and distress to people in Wellingborough Road, Northampton, on January 21.
Julie Costello, prosecuting, said a witness had seen Cooke outside Sainsbury's store near to the town centre shouting comments at members of the public who were crossing the road to avoid him.
She said a witness said he had used a "threatening tone".
Carolin McGann, representing Cooke, said her client had suffered from an extensive mental health issue but had recently started to turn his life around and had done some volunteering work.
Cooke was given a two-year Asboon February 22, 2008, banning him from begging for money or acting in a way likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
Yesterday, magistrates also sentenced him to one week in jail for breaching a previous conditional discharge, to be served concurrently.
