£64m plans for college

Tresham Institute has revealed a £64m building plan to replace two colleges and persuade the Government to open a university in the north of the county.

It has announced a 6m extension to the new Kettering campus, confirmed plans to move the existing Wellingborough college to a new town centre site and revealed a 42m design to replace its old Corby campus.

There will be space on the Kettering and Corby sites to accommodate a university campus if the Government decides to support a bid to open a university in the north of the county.

Work on all three campuses should start in April 2009, with the Kettering work due to be completed in 2010 and the buildings in Wellingborough and Corby ready for the 2011 autumn term.

The college hopes the improvements in all three towns will boost the chances of the Government deciding to pay for the building of a new university in the north of the county.

Tresham's management team has been working alongside local politicians and the Evening Telegraph in an attempt to persuade the Government to choose north Northamptonshire as the site for one of 20 new universities to be funded through its University Challenge scheme.

Principal Mark Silverman said: "These plans are great news for the people in north Northamptonshire as the new campuses will provide modern, state-of-the-art facilities for people to learn in and gain the skills they need for the workplace.

"These plans, along with a sustained focus on raising quality and standards within the college will allow Tresham to become truly outstanding."

The 16m Wellingborough campus will be built on the site currently used as Jackson's Lane car park. It will provide a skills centre to offer training in engineering, motor vehicle, construction and early years.

The Corby campus to be built on the Corby Community College site will provide the same subjects as before, specialising in construction, motor vehicle, hair and beauty as well as additional provision in business, sport, health and care. However, the catering college will move to Kettering.

The extension to the Kettering campus, which was only built last year, will incorporate hair and beauty salons and create a business and enterprise centre.

Kettering MP Philip Hollobone said: "Any extension of Tresham Institute will be warmly welcomed by local residents and will be of huge benefit to the community.

"I'm sure it will enhance the chance of establishing a higher education centre in Kettering."

And Corby and East Northamptonshire MP Phil Hope said: "This 64m for education in north Northamptonshire is fantastic news."

The Learning and Skills Council will be asked to approve the plans in the next few days.
