£60,000 park playground is ready to open
Schoolchildren as well as people from across the community will be at a fun day to celebrate the £60,000 overhaul of a park.
The transformation of Mill Road park in Kettering was recently completed after a four-month refurbishment.
The main play equipment has been moved to the opposite end of the park, meaning more space is available for St Mary's School to hold sport events and other community events.
Members of the William Knibb Community Forum and residents all had their say on what equipment should be bought and on the actual design and layout.
Kettering Council's head of community services, Valerie Hitchman, said: "It has been a pleasure to work with the school and the community on this project.
"It is wonderful to see so many children using the play area before they go to school.
"The council wishes the William Knibb Community Forum every success in the continued development of activities and further improvements within the park."
Funding was secured through Groundwork UK's Community Spaces programme, which provided 50,000.
The park also includes a dedicated fenced dog exercise area, away from the main area where children will be playing.
It is the first one at a park in Kettering.
Diane Dekker from St Mary's School said: "Children have missed the bell and have had to be called to come into school in the mornings because of the new park.
"The new open space at the side of the school will now allow us to make more use of the park during school term-time as well as providing a larger area for community events."
Wicksteed Playscapes came up with the final design which includes a hurricane swing and a fun-run as well as play frames.
As well as buying new equipment, some of the existing park equipment was refurbished.
Cllr Russell Roberts said: "The community has really got behind this project and their effort and enthusiasm has been fantastic."
A family fun day is taking place tomorrow to celebrate the refurbishment of the park.
Volunteers are needed to help on the day.
