Corby teenager accused of cooking a hamster in a microwave

A Corby teenager has been charged with cooking his little brother's hamster in a microwave.

The 16-year-old, from Corby, is accused of putting his 10-year-old brother's pet in a microwave oven and then turning it on.

The back leg of the hamster, which survived the incident, was very badly burned and its internal organs were severely damaged by the electromagnetic waves.

A vet had to put the hamster down several days later to end its suffering.

The accused was due to appear at Kettering Youth Court at Kettering Magistrates' Court yesterday to face a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal in contravention of the Animal Welfare Act.

The case was adjourned for a psychiatric report to be carried out.

He is due to appear at Kettering Youth Court again in December.
