Corby Safer Community Teams to present children with prizes

Prizes will be presented to children who took part in a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol abuse.

Corby was one of just 50 places across the country that was given 30,000 from the Home Office to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder.

The cash was given to partners working together to tackle the issue such as Corby Borough Council, Northamptonshire County Council and Northamptonshire Police. This cash was used to conduct test purchases, patrol under-age drinking hotspots and use the safety arch at licensed premises, all of which came under the banner of Operation Ampthill.

As part of the process, children at schools across Corby were asked to take part in a quiz and the 700 young people who answered the questions correctly had their names entered into a prize draw. The winners will be presented with their prizes on Thursday 25 June at 4.30pm at Corby Police Station in Elizabeth Street.

The quiz was contained in an alcohol/violence leaflet the Force produced and circulated to schools and youth groups in Corby to raise awareness of issues such as alcohol units and the consequences of alcohol-related violence.

The winners will receive 200 vouchers for sports store JJB Sports. JJB have financed half of the prizes and the rest have been paid for through Home Office funds.

Corby Sector Inspector Gary Williams said: "The leaflet and competition was one of several ways we used to deliver important messages to young people relating to the dangers of alcohol abuse and links to crime and anti-social behaviour.

"I am confident this will have raised the awareness of those young people who read the leaflet.

"Well done to the lucky winners and all those that took part."
