Corby head turns school around
The headteacher of a school put on special measures last year has been praised for her decisive action in turning it around.
Hazel Leys Nursery and Primary School in Corby has been congratulated for improvements, in particular those made by head Lorraine Norris, since it was put on special measures.
Ofsted has praised the school for its pupils' outstanding attitudes and behaviour and improvement in the quality of teaching.
In August last year the school was put on special measures but in a recent interim inspection by the inspectors, it was found to be "making satisfactory progress in addressing the issues for improvement and in raising the pupils' achievement".
Mrs Norris said: "Everybody has been working really hard and focusing and we're really pleased with the outcome.
"We're especially pleased with the comments about the pupils' behaviour and attitude to learning, which is good to outstanding.
"This is really something to be celebrated.
"We've also just received the best set of SATs results we've ever had.
"We've exceeded the targets.
"But we can't be naive and rest on our laurels. As with all schools there are things we need to improve but we've got lots of really good stuff going on."
Hazel Leys, in Gainsborough Road, was named as one of the 14 Northamptonshire schools – more than in any other education authority in England – on special measures last summer.
The inspection on June 17 found encouraging signs that the school is making good progress.
Ofsted Inspector Champak Chauhan said: "The better provision emerging within the school is the result of stronger leadership and the introduction of more robust management structures."
