Corby enterprise centre to create 170 jobs

About 170 new jobs could be created at a new £8.3m Enterprise Centre.

It is hoped work on the 43,000 sq ft complex in Corby will start this summer.

The announcement has been made just as Chesham House in Lower Street, Kettering, prepares to open as a design and technology centre providing units for small and growing businesses.

Detailed plans to build the enterprise centre next to the 30m Corby Business Academy have been submitted to the borough council.

The building will provide offices, workshops and studios for new and small businesses. The scheme looked in doubt last March when it emerged it would be too expensive to build it on a proposed site in Cockerell Road, Corby.

But the centre has now been given the go-ahead after an announcement by North Northants Development Company (NNDC), that funds are in place for the project.

Chief executive of NNDC Simon Evans said: "Corby Enterprise Centre will provide an ideal home for innovative and expanding businesses and provide local residents with a fantastic opportunity to realise career ambitions and start up on their own."

East Midlands Development Agency (emda) is putting up almost 6.5m for the business centre, which includes 1m from Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited.

Corby Council is paying about 700,000 and from the European Regional Development Fund will contribute about 1.1m.

Anthony Payne, emda's land and development director, said the centre will "drive enterprise development and stimulate employment growth, and work alongside the anticipated increase in population growth in Corby to boost the regional economy."

Plans allow for the centre to expand in the future on to a nearby plot.

Chief executive of Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited, David Wright, said: "This new enterprise centre is a valuable contribution to the ongoing regeneration of Corby and Northamptonshire, meeting needs in addressing business start-up accommodation for new and expanding business."

Bela Partnership has been selected as the site developer to build the centre, which has been designed by the Milton Keynes-based DLA Architects.
