Contracts secure work for 1,000

A construction firm is celebrating after securing contracts worth £50m for the new year.

Rushden-based Marriott Construction, which is part of the Kier Group, said it has guaranteed the employment future of about 1,000 workers by tying up three big contracts in the last month.

The news comes as many companies are struggling to beat the credit crunch and are being forced to make redundancies.

Marriott's head of business development Sharon Mitchell said: "We are very proud to be involved in these and many other prestigious contracts at the moment.

"It's extremely positive news for the company and our staff going forward into the new year. Nobody could have predicted the current economic climate and the fact that we are still securing work is fantastic news.

"These contracts are very important to us.

"They will continue to strengthen the reputation of Marriott and our parent company Kier Group, as well as providing an important boost for the industry in general and all our valued staff, who are our most important assets."

The three new projects are in the education sector in Bedfordshire.

The first, worth 4.1m, is for Cranfield University, and involves building two four-storey student accommodation blocks, totalling 106 en-suite bedrooms and communal facilities for the university.

Work started on the site at the end of November.

The second project is in Luton and worth 32m. It involves a development of 165 flats, 808 study bedrooms, 42 studios, and additional accommodation in the centre of the town, aimed at the student market.

Work on the project will run from next month to August 2010.

The final project, also in Luton, will provide a 15.7m multi-functional four-storey building for students at the University of Bedfordshire. Work on this is expected to start at the end of March.

All three developments strengthen Marriott Construction's position in the education sector following contracts such as the 27m Milton Keynes Academy and the 67m Sainsbury Laboratory for the University of Cambridge.

Marriott also recently won an award for its 26m David Wilson Library for the University of Leicester.
