Club members bowled over by car park boost

A bowling club is celebrating after winning its long-running battle for a car park at its base.

Members of Swanspool Bowling Club, Wellingborough, say they have suffered because of the lack of room for cars at Swanspool Gardens in the town.

Wellingborough Council applied to its own planning department in April to create two car parks – one for nine vehicles and the other for 19 – either side of Swanspool Pavilion, Swanspool Parade, and that plan was approved at a recent meeting.

The club wrote to the local authority supporting the plan and said it would resolve a "long standing problem" for bowlers, tennis players and residents of Swanspool Parade.

President of Swanspool Bowling Club, Gordon Dring, wrote: "On behalf of the 74 members of Swanspool Bowling Club can I say that we fully support this application.

"It will resolve a long-standing problem not only for bowlers and tennis players but also for the residents of Swanspool Parade.

"It should also mean that more people will use the pavilion for various functions.

"Can I also say that the loss of the small area of grass and flowerbed to the right of the pavilion has been more than compensated for by the recent work carried out where the old tennis courts were."

The scheme also includes the demolition of four garages and provision for four garages to be put up elsewhere.

A separate pedestrian access gate will be created off Swanspool Parade and markings, signs and speed control humps will be put in place.

Resident David Chapman, of Croyland Road, Wellingborough, has also backed the plan.

He wrote to Wellingborough Council saying the scheme was "the most practical solution" to ease parking problems.

He said the increase in spaces might also help generate more interest in the pavilion from the likes of wedding parties.
