Claire's memory is an inspiration

THE parents of a girl who died from a brain tumour are to carry on fundraising to ensure her death was not in vain.

A Glitz and Glamour Ball was held last year in memory of 11-year-old Claire Rowland, who died in 2006, raising 20,000 to fund medical research into brain tumours.

Following its success, Claire's parents Julie and Tony Rowland will hold the event again.

The couple, along with a team of fundraisers, aimed to raise 10,000 at last year's ball. But they were overwhelmed when donations and ticket sales topped 20,000.

This time they have set a fundraising target of 15,000.

Mrs Rowland, of Warkton Lane in Kettering, said: "We have been fundraising in the hope that they will find better treatment for brain tumours, so that what Claire went through wasn't for nothing – so it means something.

"There was a need to do something too. The Glitz and Glamour Ball was so good last year that we want to build on that success."

Plans are already underway for the Glitz and Glamour Ball 2008, a sparkling black-tie event with live music and an auction of promises.

For the second year it will be held at Sywell Aerodrome. This year's event will take place on November 15, and tickets are now on sale.

Proceeds will go towards the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust Claire Rowland Fund, which allows Claire's parents to decide which research projects the money should be spent on. A shortlist of suggested projects will soon be available to them.

In just 12 months, about 32,000 has been donated to Claire's fund after the family's friends and family rallied round. Fundraising activities have included people taking part in the London Marathon and the Waendel Walk. Pupils at Claire's former school, Wellingborough School, also made the fund their nominated charity of the year.

Mrs Rowland said: "It's wonderful. People have been so generous with their time as well as their money."

Tickets for the ball are 60 and they are available from 01604 864030 or tickets@glitzandglamourball.com.
