Children may help improve shelters

A town centre’s vandalised bus shelters could soon be given a facelift with help from children in the area.
Rushden Town Council has taken over the responsibility for looking after the bus shelters along Rectory Road and Skinners Hill from Northamptonshire County Council and wants to improve them. The shelters suffer from vandalism and have had their perspex side panels destroyed.
Now the town council is considering ways to improve the shelters which include replacing the panels with boarding and inviting schoolchildren to come up with innovative designs for them.
Town council leader Cllr Sarah Peacock said: “We want to keep the bus shelters fresh and give them a coat of paint. Sadly, the shelters get vandalised and their perspex gets smashed. We don’t think we can keep replacing the perspex on a regular basis. One of the options we’re looking at is getting some boarding for them and asking children to do some murals on them. Hopefully they’ll look brighter and won’t get vandalised if the children have been involved.”
Harry Graham, of Rushden Pensioners Forum, said: “We’ve been complaining about the state of the shelters for some time, they need attention and work. If the council’s going to put in plywood that’s fine but it would be nice if we could have some wooden shelters like they do in Irthlingborough or stone ones like the ones in Barton Seagrave because they aren’t subject to having glass broken.”
The shelters outside Asda were not on the list of shelters which were handed over to the town council. It is trying to find out who owns them.
