Chicken puts some excitement into election campaign, but fox fails to hunt down target

Finally, at long last, some excitement has been injected into the election in the form of a man in a chicken suit and an egg-thrower.

These are the kind of political stunts that make election campaigns memorable.

Who can forget Prescott's punch?

Unfortunately, an attempt at a similar stunt in Corby this week backfired horribly.

The League Against Cruel Sports sent a man in a fox suit into the town, and assured us they would be "hunting" Conservative candidate Louise Bagshawe.

Unfortunately, Louise was nowhere to be seen and the fox was seen forlornly posing for photographers alone. Hence, no picture in the ET.

The thing about publicity stunts is that you need to make sure your victim is going to be available.

On the subject of Corby candidates, I was surprised to see Labour man Phil Hope on the campaign trail in Northampton backing Sally Keeble.

By all accounts, he has a tough enough job defending his own seat without taking time out to support county colleagues.

Or does he think it is all done and dusted in Corby?

It's not often I find myself agreeing with Michael Portillo, but I have to agree with the views he expressed about Gordon Brown on This Week with Andrew Neil on Monday.

Mr Portillo, whose defeat in 1997 is still one of the greatest election television moments of all time, expressed the view that following Nick Clegg's surge in popularity we have the real prospect of a hung Parliament that would lead to a Lib-Lab pact and see Gordon Brown retained as Prime Minister.

Some pundits say he could even keep the job despite his party in real danger of getting the smallest share of the vote among the three big hitters.

If this was the case, we would have a Prime Minister unelected to lead his own party, unelected to lead the country and at the head of the most unpopular of the three main parties. Call that democracy?

The Green Party has been among the most prolific in sending us details of their campaign in the county.

Obviously, these have been by email rather than threaten another rainforest with paper-based statements.

It is just a shame that the party has been unable to find enough candidates to stand in all the constituencies in the county.
