Charity volunteer condemns firework yobs

A CHARITY shop volunteer has condemned yobs who posted a lit firework through the letterbox of the store.

Firefighters were called to the Red Cross shop in School Road, Irchester, on Tuesday night after a passer-by noticed smoke in the building.

A volunteer who works in the shop said she was disgusted at what had happened.

The volunteer, who has asked to remain anonymous, said: "We're lucky that the firework didn't take hold and only burned the mat at the door. If it had taken hold it would have been disastrous.

"We're a voluntary organisation working for the good of the community.

"It's very, very annoying – I can't understand why anyone would do it.

"I have been a volunteer here for a couple of years and we've never had a firework through the letterbox like this before."

She added: "Luckily it didn't cause much damage – not as much as when someone put a brick through one of our windows last year.

"I love fireworks and get a lot of pleasure from them.

"However, I think they should be banned from public sale as there are some who are going to cause problems like this."

Firefighter Jed Goodfellow said: "Luckily the firework

didn't take hold inside the shop but this could have been a lot, lot worse.

"By the time we got there we had to break the front door down so we could get into the building. The Red Cross are people who are just trying to help others and to do this is just disgusting."

Irchester town councillor Tim Maguire said: "I'm very concerned this has happened, especially to a charity.

"With the dark nights coming in I just hope we don't have any more incidents like this. We had damage caused to play equipment and bins last year b
