Cash boost is ace for women's club

A club for women over 55 has been awarded more than £3,000 on its fifth birthday.

The Ace Club, which meets at the Conservative Club in Cottingham Road, Corby, has been awarded 3,375 from the National Lottery's Funds For All grant scheme.

The cash will be spent on organising trips, providing transport for members and booking speakers to come to meetings.

Club secretary Margaret McDowell said: "We have this money to spend over the next year so will be putting it towards running trips, hiring speakers and generally running the club.

"We are nearly all pensioners and some members are in their 80s so the club gives people something to do on a regular basis.

"When you retire you can sometimes find it hard to find things to do to keep you busy.

"The club gives people something to do so that they are not just sitting in the house.

"We always do something, even if it is just a bit of line dancing."

The group has had a variety of talks in the last year and is always keen to invite new speakers along to give presentations on a range of subjects.

Organisers say the group offers a mixture of education, fitness and fun activities throughout the year and the funding will allow this to continue. The club was set up in 2005 with the help of Corby Volunteer Bureau and has become very popular.

There are 54 members who take part in the club's activities and there is a waiting list of 20 women who are keen to join.

The club meets every Wednesday for its activities.

As well as having speakers, the group has also raised funds for charity.

Members raised 300 for the breast cancer charity Crazy Hats by organising a walk around West Glebe Park, Corby, in Spring 2008.

They were also involved in a project to knit blankets for orphans in India who had lost everything in the tsunami which struck on Boxing Day 2004.

If you would like to find out more about the Ace Club please telephone Margaret McDowell on 01536 260624.
