Carlsberg's healthy forecast of beer profits

Brewer Carlsberg has announced it performed strongly in the first quarter of 2009, as the global recession took hold.

Announcing interim results, the firm – which has a Northampton brewery – said it was reducing costs to offset the impact the uncertain market.

Chief executive Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen said: "We have continued to focus on reducing costs and improving efficiency to protect earnings and improve cash flow."

He said the company was on track to achieve its full-year targets.

"We are well prepared for the challenges ahead, and will continue to monitor and manage the business carefully and balance the need for cost reductions while pursuing our long-term growth plans."

Mr Rasmussen told shareholders there had been a decline in beer consumption in Europe.

Carlsberg announced in November it would shut its Leeds operation in 2011, with the loss of 140 jobs.

The firm is on course to make profits of at least 441 million for the year.
