By George, what a celebration!

HUNDREDS of Scouts, Cubs and Beavers joined together at sites across the county yesterday to mark St George's Day.

Three major events were held at Wicksteed Park in Kettering, All Saints Church in Wellingborough and Huxlow Science College in Irthlingborough, following the patron saint of England’s day on Wednesday.

At Wicksteed Park, members of the Glendon District, which includes groups from across Kettering and Corby, marched across the park before taking part in a service.

District chairman Chris Jervis said: “This is the most important day in the Scouting calendar.

“We are obviously celebrating St George’s Day but this is also the day when all the Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and leaders renew their promises.”

Nine-year-old Cub David Bilsby is a member of the 15th Avondale Kettering Group.

He said: “I really enjoy being a Cub – it’s fun, you get to do lots of activities and work towards badges.”

Scout leader Lee Richardson was at Wicksteed with troops from the 1st Corby Scouts.

He said: “The Scouting movement is more popular than it has ever been.

“We have got lots of Cubs, Scouts and Beavers in the town.

“It’s a great way of getting youngsters off the streets and doing some great activities.”

First Corby Scout Rudi Vizma, 11, said: “It’s fun being a Scout. I enjoy the activities and the camping.”

In Irthlingborough members of the Nene Valley District marched along Finedon Road before hundreds of youngsters converged at Huxlow Science College.

Members of the 1st Irthlingborough group attended a service at St Peter’s Church before heading off for a host of Scouting activities.

Irthlingborough Scout Calum King, 11, said: “We went to church and then we paraded to the school.

“The parade was exciting because a lot of people came out of their houses to watch, which made me feel special.

“When we got to the school we had lunch and then we got try things like archery and rifle shooting, which was a lot of fun.”

Irthlingborough Scouts group secretary David Maddock said: “This is a particularly special day because it also marks 100 years of continual Scouting in the town.

“We are one of the only groups in the country to have achieved this.”

In Wellingborough youngsters assembled at Dale End before parading to All Saints Church for a service.
