Business brains at work together

Students from two schools joined forces in a bid to become entrepreneurs of the future.

Year 7 pupils from Corby Business Academy and Brooke Weston Academy in Corby took on the roles of international companies, trading with each other in order to make the most profit as part of the two-day event.

Exports and imports, marketing, selling and advertising were key features of the day as part of the event Young Enterprise East Midlands held earlier this week.

Pupil Thomas Morby from Corby Business Academy said: "We learnt a lot about trading and how companies from different countries trade with each other.

"We also learnt about interest rates and the financial side of trading and so it will make understanding the news easier."

The sessions at Brooke Weston were led by Robin Neighbour from Young Enterprise and had challenges including finding where commodities are produced, how they are transported and what is the cost, in food miles, of typical dishes, such as pizza, curry and Sunday roast.

Mr Neighbour said: "This was a wide-ranging task with lots of topics to cover so there was a lot happening. The students were getting along with each other really well so it has been a very successful assignment."

The students were also split into teams representing nations and were given resources according to the wealth of their country, before trading with other, and approaching the 'World Bank' for loans if needed.

The aim was to teach pupils about the difficulties faced by poorer countries with fewer resources.

Tracey Jones, who helped organise the event at Brooke Weston Academy, said: "The motto of Young Enterprise is to introduce students to the world of business through practical sessions."

It was the first time that the Year 7 students from the two schools had worked together.
