Budget superstore to pull out of town
Budget food store Netto in Corby is to close next month with the loss of up to 13 jobs.
The town centre supermarket will close on Saturday, November 21, although a store spokesman said they would look at opening another store in the town if a suitable site became available.
The 10,000 sq ft unit at the Oasis Retail Park, off Alexandra Road, is to be demolished to make way for Land Securities' town centre redevelopment plans.
A spokesman for the company, which owns the town centre, said: "It is with regret that the Netto supermarket will close on Saturday, November 21.
"As a result we have informed 13 colleagues at the store that their jobs are at risk of redundancy. We are currently in consultation with colleagues regarding this situation and will do everything we can to minimise the impact of the store closure.
"If we can secure a suitable, alternative site on acceptable terms, we would be pleased to open another store in Corby."
Store shopper Kate Booth, 60, of Argyll Street, Corby, said: "I was quite surprised when I heard about this. There will be nothing in the town centre now apart from the Co-op which is dearer.
In July last year, the Evening Telegraph reported that the lease on the store, one of the largest in the town, had been put on the market by town centre owners Land Securities. It followed a break in the lease from Netto.
A spokesman for the company said: "It's not good news for Corby to have empty units.
"We have had early discussions with one or two potential retailers. We haven't got any names and nothing has been agreed as yet. But we will be re-letting it."
