Brothers in arms join Aidan events

Soldiers from the battalion of Aidan Howell will join a fundraising event in his memory.

Family, friends and neighbours of Desborough serviceman Aidan Howell are holding a sponsored walk around Desborough, Arthingworth, Harrington and Rothwellon Sunday, June 27.

Organisers will be selling T-shirts at the top of Havelock Street in Desborough from 9am tomorrow.

The shirts have a picture of Aidan on the front and a "Marching on in memory of Aidan Howell" on the back.

They will also be for sale on the recreation ground at the town's carnival day on Saturday, June 26.

Rose McClarnon, committee secretary of the Aidan Howell memorial fund, said: "The T-shirts were donated by a Corby company.

"An unbelievable amount of people have shown support. We have got about 130 walkers so far. The support from the local community has been absolutely fantastic.

"We've raised quite a bit of money already.

"We've also sold quite a few T-shirts."

Proceeds from the fundraiser on June 27 will be spilt between The 3 Rifles Benevolent Trust and local organisations.

The walk starts at 9am from Desborough Town Football Club car park in Braybrooke Road.

It will end at the memorial in Lower Street.

Some of Aidan's friends from the 3rd Battalion, The Rifles, will also take part in a five-mile run starting at 8.30am on the same day before catching up with the walkers to complete both events.

There will be entertainment afterwards in The Services Club, Desborough, including a barbecue, musicians, a young local drummer, a bouncy castle, helium balloon release, raffle and Elvis impersonator.

Aidan, 19, died on patrol in Helmand Province in Afghanistan in December last year.

The Aidan Howell Memorial Fund was created in April to continue raising money for the Rifles Benevolent Trust and for local teenagers.

Since the teenager's death, 7,000 has been donated, prompting the committee to organise a community event to show their appreciation.

The Tshirts for the walk are 5 each. To donate money or a raffle

prize, contact Steven Straford on 07860 100431.

Cheques should be made payable to the Aidan Howell Memorial Fund.
