Book festival comes to Corby
Storytellers, magicians and puppeteers are just some of the performers who will be coming together when a month-long festival to celebrate the importance of books is held in Corby.
The action-packed Play on Words – The Corby Literacy Festival 2009 will start on Monday and will continue until Sunday, March 15.
More events than ever have been planned for the annual festival, which has been organised by Corby Council and its partners.
All activities will take place in and around the town and will include visits from theatre companies, film screenings and workshops.
About 10,000 leaflets about Play on Words and 3,000 programmes are being delivered in the borough this week in preparation for the busy four weeks.
Corby Council leader Pat Fawcett said: "This is something that should be really good fun and we hope as many people as possible come along and see what it is all about.
"I am really looking forward to the launch on Monday and watching a puppet show, which I hope will bring out the child in me.
"The festival is a way children can learn while enjoying themselves."
Events which will be taking place include making story characters come to life through mask-making, illustration workshops and textile workshops.
A myths and legends workshop is also due to take place, as are lessons on how to make puppets.
A number of the events will be held in the Corby Town Cinema Suite, which will be set up in Willow Place, while others will be staged in Corby Library, as well as in schools and parks.
The festival will close with a balloon launch on March 15 in the town centre. A spokesman for Corby Council said: "All activities will be taking place in and around Corby and now is your chance to get your hands on the full events list.
"You can pick one up from Corby Council's One Stop Shop, Lodge Park Sports Centre, Corby Swimming Pool, your local community centre, schools and doctors' waiting rooms.
"Each booklet has a description of activities, times, dates and venues – so pick up a copy today and fill your month with the fun and magic of words."
The festival has been put together by Corby Council with Willow Place and Corby Town Shopping, Corby Learning Partnership (Corby Reads) and England Arts Council.
