Boat builders’ unrest over new scheme

FAIRLINE workers are to be subject to a consultants’ ballot on whether to take industrial action over a profit-share row.

Members of the Unite union working at the boat builders’ bases in Corby and Oundle are to take part in the ballot on Monday.

If they vote ‘yes’ the union will conduct a full ballot at a later date.

The company has negotiated with Unite for three months over the new profit-share scheme that will benefit workers. The union recommended members accept it, but workers voted against it. The company then introduced it anyway.

Unite regional officer Adrian Jones said: “It’s a change to their terms and conditions although it may actually pay out more than the existing scheme.

“The workers are angry that the firm has just arbitrarily changed their terms and conditions.

“I’ve been officer there for four years and after redundancies, pay freezes and giving up holidays this is the issue I’ve seen the most anger about. It’s about trust. We really don’t want to take action.”

A company spokesman said: “Fairline management and Unite have been in negotiations for three months. The offer that has been implemented was recommended by union officials for acceptance. “However the offer was rejected by the Fairline membership.

“Fairline and Unite believed prior to the ballot, that the agreed offer was the only available result that provides a fair outcome for employees. Knowing all employees will be better off with this scheme was a key factor in the subsequent decision to implement taken by Fairline management.”
